What is Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)?

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a disease characterised by chronic or long-lasting inflammation of the liver due to the inflammation, damage and ultimately destruction of small bile ducts. This causes bile to remain in the liver, damaging liver cells over time and resulting in cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver. As cirrhosis progresses, and the liver becomes increasingly scarred it loses its ability to function1.

How common is Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)?

PBC affects 10 times more women than men and is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged women between the ages of about 30 and 60. PBC is considered to be an uncommon disease, but not rare1.
